what is 'bike culture"? (part two in an occasional series)

From Veloquent

While I was out of town on vacation this week, there was an incident between a bicycle rider and a car driver in southeast Portland. It got ugly and nasty. Alcohol was involved. So, apparently, was a lack of good judgment on the part of several individuals at the scene. Since I don't know the full story, I suggest you check out the details at the Oregonian newspaper: read more here

I hope homeless people are included in bike culture. But yeah, it would be nice to be able to talk about bike culture the same way we talk about car culture now, where it's mostly 'just the way it is'.

I was thinking about posting this on the SCCC roadies list, but I'm also wondering here. Does anyone ride on arterials just to prove a point and show an alternative with $4/gal gas? I usually avoid them. I rode on Whitesburg some over the weekend of the 4th since there wasn't much traffic the whole weekend, and someone honked at me. That made me want to be out there more to show more people what they could/should be doing instead. Another day I rode on Carl T Jones/Bailey Cove when there was more traffic than I expected on the long downhill portion and all the motorists seemed fine with it and didn't get too close or anything. I'm wondering if I should prefer arterials more since it's better distance and often grade/total vertical wise for me anyway. I still won't be choosing 431 and Governors much for the climb since there is the shoulder on Cecil Ashburn and plenty of traffic there. The shoulder is largely there for cyclists, and I want to show my appreciation.

WHAT? ARE YOU SERIOUS... WHO SAID ANYTHING ABOUT HOMELESS PEOPLE BEING EXCLUDED FROM BICYCLE CULTURE I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU WOULD EVEN BRING THAT UP...IT'S THE SAME AS SOMEONE JUMPING OUT THERE PULLING THE RACIST CARD WHEN IT HASN'T EVEN CAME UP IN THE CONVERSATION IT'S ABOUT BICYCLE CULTURE NOT SOCI0-ECONOMIC STATUS IF YOU EVEN THINK WE WOULD EXCLUDE HOMELESS PEOPLE THEN WE SHOULD START EXCLUDING PEOPLE BASED ON POLITICAL AFFILIATION OR RELIGION IF WE ARE GOING TO BE CLOSED MINDED BIGOTS WE SHOULD SINGLE OUT EVERYONE EQUALLY...WTF

Read the entire post again. The Veloquent author is who mentioned it, and that is what I was replying to. I did not pull that card. But yeah I agree that we should not do that at all.
