Mayor's Walk and Ride May 2nd

Would like to get some opinions and ideas for the May 2nd Mayor's ride, we can then pass this along to the city.

1: The ride should take place from downtown, this is a central place and will be visible to all of the Public.

2: Instead of just a ride have a short short portion of the route for: walking, skateboard, strollers etc... We need to include everyone, this will help with educating and promoting this to the public.

3: Have booths setup maybe in the park or downtown square to promote all different forms of transport. We don't need to just have "clubs and organization's being the only ones representing this.

4: Tall Bikes

5: Music ..... Festival....

6: We should also help with promoting it: Flyers, Email, Press Releases, News Media ..........

7: Car Free day??? Or promote car pooling to the ride.

Hopefully the buses will all have bike racks like they were already scheduled to have by now. Then the public transit division or whatever can set up a booth for that. It would also be nice to have bike cops who actually rode their bikes from the precint instead of put the bikes on their cars for like 2 miles to stand around with the bike like they did at the Big Spring Park press conference during the previous administration.

I agree, it should be made into a sort of festival, including all alternative forms of transportation as well as some sort of official unveiling of plans and routes and whatnot for bikes and peds. The bus system could be promoted on that day as well. I know it might require the forming of some sort of committee, but this really should be a highly orchestrated and publicized thing.

I'd be more than happy to put my planning skillz to work, getting bands and food and promotional stuff started. I'd be less than happy for this to be handled by the bike club heads and city planners who are too far disconnected from the average person to adequately represent us..but that's a rant for another day :)

Anyone know a Bio Diesel or Alt energy person?

I agree with both of you a nice cross section of the population (commuters). We need everyone to be involved not just one club or committee.

Or a buy local representative I know a organic farmer here too.

Matt at Trailhead knows a guy that uses biodiesel in his 80s Ford truck and also rides bikes. And I vote for Ashley coordinating the food instead of anyone from the city or BASC :-) Could we have a Huntsville Utilities or TVA person for the green power, or do we want this to be transportation only?

Lets see it could be like the artist thing around the square with different booths etc... alternatives fuel, transport, buy local - farms, brewery, etc... tie it in and start educating the public.....

hey if it takes off maybe one day they could close off the square on saturdays and have a farmers market like other cities. I am aware and go to the one in town also:)

I think that's a great idea. You should probably find out what kinda papers you need to file with the city to get a permit for a festival like this, get folks organized, and tie it in with the whole Mayor's city ride. That would be killer!

yah, a big LOCAL street fest sounds great. the city could easily close a good chunk of downtown to cars for a day. in jamaica plain/boston we used to have a few a year (wake up the earth, jp world's fair) and it was a great way for the whole neighborhood to get together - with local businesses supplying the food and drinks and local artists playing music and having booths.

i also like the idea of a 'play street' like they do in brooklyn where cones are put up closing a street/block to traffic and letting kids enjoy their trikes, scooters, skateboards, foursquare games, bubbles etc. safely.

I'm pretty sure the city will close it because I went through there one morning and early afternoon when the square and some more was closed for a yard sale or something.

Should have an area to show various style/types of bikes so people realize bikes come in all shapes, sizes, ages, etc.

And/ or a vintage bike section.

Polo demo?

shut down the square for all-day polo!
