Americans Are Still Buying Gas-Guzzlers, But Here Are 7 Signs That the Market for Green Transport Is Exploding

Americans get a lot of flack for their big cars. And often for good reason.

After sales figures for the first half of 2009 came in, it's looking like Ford's F-Series pickup trucks are set to make their 28th year at the top of the charts, with nearly 180,000 sold in the first two quarters.

With gas mileage near the bottom of the heap -- 15 miles per gallon in the city and around 20 on the highway -- the trucks are icons of America's suicidal obsession with gas guzzlers. read more here

I love this article. When I go out of town rather then taking my car which is a gas guzzler I rent a Prius. I like the fifth sign because more people should do it. It's healthy and can sometimes get you to your destination faster.

If only Huntsville corrected it's public transportation system then they can actually call themselves a progressive city.

The amount of trucks and other gas guzzling, road hogging vehicles in HSV is depressing.

Sorry kids about the environment?

I was behind a suburban on whitesburg recently and they don't even fit in the lane. Thankfully they are rebuilding the roads to fit more of these. Thankfully people don't buy into Climate Change here.

How is it that a college student gets it and so many others haven't a clue?

I don't like SUVs or trucks. They often get used when a sedan or minivan would do. Or they get used for ego. But trucks have a place. Some of the cars I see often piss me off more. You don't need a V8 Mercedes. The V6 would have worked. You don't need the extra sport package. The V6 Ford Mustang I saw the other day had a 16/24 mileage on the sticker. My mom drives an SUV that gets better mileage than that. My dad's truck gets better mileage than that. If that wasn't bad enough for you, there's a V8 and a supercharged V8 option. They now make a twin turbo Ford Taurus with more power than a Corvette had 5 years ago.

what is funny is that even with the twin-turbo v6 it only gets 1 mph/gallon less than the base modesl
